Situé à l’extrême Sud de Madagascar, Ampanihy, petite bourgade isolée, demeure la capitale du tapis mohair.
Pays aride et sec, les hommes vivent essentiellement d’élevage.
Par ailleurs, les femmes ont développé leur propre activité.
De la laine mohair issue des chèvres angora, appréciée en Occident pour la douceur
de ses pull-overs, naquit le tapis d’Ampanihy.
Rarissime dans le monde entier, le tissage du mohair demeure long et fastidieux.
Les métiers à tisser font partie intégrante du décor et des activités quotidiennes de la femme « Antandroy » et « Mahafaly ».
Dans les années 90, Eric et Lova, s’installèrent à Ampanihy afin de
relancer une qualité disparue. Après des années d’effort, de formation des tisserandes aux nouvelles techniques ; le résultat combiné des deux cultures nous offre aujourd’hui un tapis à 70.000noeuds/m². Bijoux et tissus « mahafaly » et « antandroy » sont la source d’inspiration majeure de nos motifs. Nos teintures végétales issues de la région apportent à nos couleurs leur unicité. Le mohair est une laine résistante, lumineuse et soyeuse, sa résilience est parfaite; ce qui donne aux tapis mille reflets ainsi qu’une douceur exceptionnelle. Durant la réalisation du tapis, les femmes travaillent par binôme. Le tapis enrôlé sur métier n’est pas visible avant sa complète réalisation (environ 2 mois de travail suivant dimension). Dès lors, chaque tapis fini demeure à l’atelier un instant magique et plein d’émotion. Unique, il a été confectionné avec amour et patience. C’est dans la plus pure tradition, que de génération en génération, ces femmes ont voulu partager leur culture et dans nos tapis se dégage toute l’âme du Sud malagasy.
Situated in the deep south of Madagascar,
the small village of Ampanihy is the capital of mohair carpets.
A dry and arid region where most people are herdsmen.
Because of this the women have developed their own occupation.
From the mohair wool which comes from the Angora goat come the soft pullovers much appreciated by westerners, and also the carpets from Ampanihy.
The weaving of mohair carpets is time consuming and tedious and are therefore very rare worldwide.
The work of weaving is an integral part of the décor and daily work of the “Antandroy” and “Mahafaly” women.
In the 90’s Eric and Lova settled in Ampanihy to relance a quality of weaving that had disappeared.
After years of effort, the formation of weavers and new techniques appeared; the result of the 02 combined cultures offers us a carpet of 70.000knots/m². Jewels and cloth of the « Mahafaly » and « Antandroy » are the main source of inspiration for our design/motifs. The local vegetal dyes give our colours their uniqueness. Mohair is wool that is resistant, bright and silky; its resilience is perfect; giving the carpets thousands of sparkles and an exceptional softness. During the making of a carpet, 2 women work together as a team. A carpet can only be entirely seen when it is completed as it is rolled on its weaving frame as it progresses (this takes roughly 2 months depending on size). Therefore when a carpet is finished, it’s a magic and emotional moment in the workshop. Absolutely unique made with love and patience. It is in this pure tradition that, from generation to generation, these women share their culture which reflects in our carpets the soul of southern Madagascar.
